Public school teachers in Edo State have issued a warning of a possible strike action, citing unpaid allowances, overcrowded classrooms, and deteriorating learning facilities across the state.
Members of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) say several entitlements, including promotion arrears and rural posting allowances, have remained unpaid for months. Teachers in riverine and rural areas say they are particularly affected, with some schools lacking basic furniture, teaching materials, and functioning toilets.
Union leaders warn that continued neglect could disrupt academic activities if government fails to address the concerns promptly. They say teachers are struggling to cope with rising living costs while still expected to deliver quality education.
Officials from the Edo State Ministry of Education acknowledged the complaints and said discussions with union representatives are ongoing to prevent industrial action.
