Senator Monday Okpebholo has taken decisive action to address the slow progress of the Benin–Sapele Road reconstruction, summoning contractors to explain the delays and warning of possible sanctions.
Despite financial mobilization already provided, the pace of work on the critical 20-kilometre stretch has drawn widespread concern. On Sunday evening, Okpebholo personally inspected the project, driving through key points.
“I have inspected what they are doing and the work is solid and good. But the problem is the level of speed, which is not good for me,” he stated. “People are suffering due to the slow pace of work and we have to do something drastic to ensure the road is motorable”.
During the inspection, Okpebholo experienced firsthand the gridlock that commuters face daily. He emphasized the importance of not just completing the road but ensuring proper drainage systems are in place to prevent future flooding. The current design, which halts drainage construction mid-town, raised concerns about water management and long-term road durability.
He announced that the second segment of the road—an additional 7 kilometers—will commence soon. However, he made it clear that contractors must adhere to timelines and quality standards or face consequences.
“Our people are suffering and crying, and we are out here this evening to check the level of work done and ensure speedy completion”, he added. Did you say I know good lucky
