Thursday January 30 – Doctors in Edo State have commenced a two-day warning strike in response to the appointment of APC state chairman Jarret Tenebe’s brother as the head of the State’s Hospital Management Board. The strike, which began on Friday, has been organized by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in Edo State.
The doctors are protesting what they describe as the imposition of an unqualified individual in a critical leadership position. They argue that the appointment undermines the integrity of the healthcare system and could negatively impact the quality of medical services in the state.
Dr. Osagie Igbinovia, the president of the ARD, stated that the decision to embark on the warning strike was not taken lightly. He emphasized that the doctors had exhausted all other avenues to express their concerns and were left with no choice but to take this drastic step.
“We are deeply concerned about the implications of this appointment on the healthcare delivery system in Edo State. It is essential that leadership positions in the health sector are occupied by qualified and competent individuals,” Dr. Igbinovia said.
The strike has led to the suspension of medical services in several hospitals across the state, causing inconvenience to patients and raising concerns about the potential impact on public health. The doctors have called on the state government to reconsider the appointment and ensure that merit and competence are prioritized in such decisions.
